Peer Support Relationships @ Palm View Primary

Palm View Primary School implements the Peer Support and Relationships (PSR) programme to build a strong positive, caring culture among pupils, grounded on the belief that a well-supported community enhances both academic learning and psychological well-being. Through this programme, all students are equipped with essential peer bonding, peer helping, and peer influencing skills to support one another effectively as peer supporters. Students also participate in cyber-wellness activities organised by the school.

The PSR programme strengthens the school’s culture of care by fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students feel accepted and empowered, leading to positive child development, risk prevention, and improved learning outcomes holistically.

The three domains of PSR are:

1) Peer Bonding

2) Peer Helping

3) Peer Influencing

There are three tiers of implementation of Peer Support Relationships.

Tier 1: Every student is a peer supporter.
Tier 2: Selected P3 students are selected as Befrienders who learn to acquire skills in extending care, inclusion, responsibility, and positive influence.
Tier 3: Selected P4 to P6 students are chosen as Peer Support Leaders (PSL) to lead, champion and advocate PSR efforts.

All students, as peer supporters, will be equipped with skills and competencies to better support their peers. Some of these skills include:

How to be a better friend
How to be a better listener
How to befriend their peers

Primary 3 to 6 selected students will be trained to take on additional responsibilities as Befrienders and Peer Support Leaders (PSLs). These student leaders help to look out for peers who may feel lonely or isolated and reach out to befriend and support them. They also provide a listening ear for students who may be experiencing difficulties, offering encouragement and care when needed.

As positive role models, Peer Support Leaders influence others by promoting positive mindsets, pro-social behaviour, and good character. Through their leadership and example, they help to strengthen a caring and supportive school culture where every student feels valued and supported. Together, through the various levels of peer support, we aim to grow a community built on empathy, care, kindness and shared mutual responsibility.

Befrienders and Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) will also be supported by the PSL teachers-in-charge, the School Counsellor, Special Needs Officers and the Student Management Department.

Befrienders and Peer Support Leaders’ main roles will include:
